Economic unions of Municipalities as enablers of local economic development

The Mayors` Club begins preparations for the implementation of a large-scale all-Ukrainian project “From strong municipalities to strong Ukraine”. The aim of the project is a concrete roadmap for coordination and partnership between municipalities and the local private sector in order to lay the foundation for a sustainable local economy that will create jobs and economic opportunities and improve the living conditions of the entire economic union.

Economic unions have proven to be a valuable tool for municipalities seeking to improve their economic prospects. These unions allow cities and towns to work together to achieve common goals, such as increasing trade and investment, improving infrastructure, and promoting economic growth. In this article, we will explore the benefits of economic unions for municipalities and highlight some successful examples.

1. Increased Economic Strength

By joining together in an economic union, municipalities can increase their economic strength. The combined resources under one vision of multiple towns and cities can be used to attract investment and increase trade, which can create jobs and boost economic growth. Economic unions can also help to level the playing field between small and large municipalities, ensuring that all members have access to the same resources and opportunities.

2. Shared Resources and Expertise

Municipalities that are part of an economic union can share resources and expertise to achieve common goals. For example, one town may have expertise in a certain industry, while another may have natural resources and other resources. By working together, municipalities can pool their funding, resources and expertise to achieve more than they could individually.

3. Improved Infrastructure

Economic unions can also help to improve infrastructure in member municipalities. By working together, municipalities can leverage funding and resources to improve roads, bridges, and other infrastructure that is critical to economic growth. This can make the region more attractive to businesses and investors, leading to increased economic activity.

4. Increased Political Clout

Municipalities that are part of an economic union can also benefit from increased political clout. By working together, they can advocate for policies and funding that benefit the entire region. This can be particularly important when competing for state or federal funding, as larger, more politically powerful regions may have an advantage.

5. Business development

Economic unions are most effective when attracting local businesses from municipalities. Only by jointly developing strategies and plans for economic development, real results are possible, not empty documents.

The Mayors` Club is also developing and will begin to implement the Benefactors program, in which local businesses promote themselves around the world, while at the same time support their municipalities and work together towards economic development. At the same time, Mayors` Club partners promote patrons, their products and services through all their information channels and international events.

Successful Examples of Economic Unions

There are many successful examples of economic unions around the world. One notable example is the European Union (EU), which was founded in 1993 and has since grown to include 27 member states. The EU has been successful in promoting economic growth and trade between member states, and has helped to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Another successful example is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was founded in 1967 and currently has 10 member states. ASEAN has been successful in promoting economic growth and trade between member states, and has helped to promote political stability in the region.

In the United States, the National League of Cities is an economic union that represents over 19,000 municipalities across the country. The League provides resources and advocacy on behalf of its members, and has been successful in promoting economic growth and development at the local level.

Conclusion

Economic unions can be a valuable tool for municipalities seeking to improve their economic prospects. By working together, municipalities can increase their economic strength, share resources and expertise, improve infrastructure, and increase political clout. There are many successful examples of economic unions around the world, and municipalities that are considering joining an economic union should carefully consider the potential benefits and drawbacks before making a decision.
