In 2014, he became a member of the executive committee of the Skadovsk City Council. In the fall of 2015, he was elected mayor of Skadovsk. In April 2017, the Skadovsk District Court found Yakovlev guilty in an administrative corruption case. Later, he was handed 3 more corruption reports, all of which were supported by court decisions. The essence of the case was that the mayor’s office purchased stationery from the mayor’s wife’s store for several thousand hryvnias, and he did not report the conflict of interest and signed the financial documents. The case was led by the then deputy chairman of the regional council, and now collaborator Vitaliy Buliuk. In December 2017, the Skadovsk District Court ruled to remove the mayor of the city, Oleksandr Yakovlev, from office for a year, which meant the termination of his powers. The city council secretary Oleg Sokolchu became the acting mayor. In April 2018, the Kherson Regional Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the first instance court. In the winter of 2019, he was a trustee of the presidential candidate Andriy Sadovyi. In the summer of 2019, he ran for parliament in the 186th constituency from the Samopomich party. In the fall of 2020, he won the election for the second time. On March 16, Russians kidnapped the mayor of Skadovsk. An hour later, a huge rally gathered near the city council, with participants demanding the mayor’s return. It helped – Oleksandr Yakovlev was released and soon left Kherson region. He is currently working in Lviv.
